When to Come for Fall Colors

Fall is probably our favorite time at the lake house. The crowds are gone, the water is still warm enough to swim, and the colors are unreal. Here's what you need to know if you're thinking about a fall trip.

When to Visit

Peak Foliage Timing

Fall color in New Hampshire progresses from north to south and from high elevations to low. Here's what to expect:

Early September:

  • Color begins in the White Mountains
  • Higher elevations showing first hints of change
  • Lakes Region still mostly green

Mid-September:

  • White Mountains approaching peak
  • Northern Lakes Region starting to turn
  • Great time for fewer crowds

Late September to Early October:

  • PEAK in the Lakes Region
  • Hermit Lake area at its most colorful
  • Perfect combination of color and weather

Mid-October:

  • Southern NH at peak
  • Lakes Region past peak but still beautiful
  • Seacoast showing color

Late October:

  • Most leaves fallen in Lakes Region
  • Southern areas finishing
  • Quieter, more contemplative atmosphere

2026 Prediction

Based on historical patterns and current conditions, we expect peak foliage in the Lakes Region around September 28 - October 8, 2026. However, weather can shift timing by a week or more in either direction.

Scenic Drives

Kancamagus Highway (1 hour north) The "Kanc" is New Hampshire's most famous foliage drive, and for good reason. This 34.5-mile stretch through the White Mountains offers non-stop color.

Tips:

  • Start early (by 8 AM) to avoid crowds
  • Plan 3-4 hours with stops
  • Best viewpoints: Sabbaday Falls, Rocky Gorge, Kancamagus Pass
  • Bring snacks—limited services on the highway

Castle in the Clouds (30 minutes) This mountaintop estate offers panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding foliage. The winding drive up is spectacular.

What to Do:

  • Tour the historic mansion
  • Hike the estate trails
  • Lunch at the Carriage House cafe
  • Photography from multiple viewpoints

Mount Major (30 minutes) A moderate 3.5-mile round-trip hike rewards you with 360-degree views of the Lakes Region in full fall color.

Hiking Tips:

  • Start early for parking
  • Allow 2-3 hours round trip
  • Bring layers—it's cooler at the summit
  • The blue trail is most scenic
